Looking for a job? Make sure your credit report is in check!

Many employers will check the credit reports of job applicants to look for indicators of responsibility, reasoning that someone who pays his or her bills on time is more likely to show up to work and finish projects on time. If your report has blemishes, use these tips to clean up your report.

• Pay on time: If you’ve made credit missteps in the past (bankruptcy, late payments, etc.), try to course correct by establishing a positive payment history in the future. Most negative data remains on your report for 7 years, but the past 2 years carry the most weight.
• Lower your debt: If you have high balances on credit cards and personal loans, find ways to lower your interest rates and free up cash to make more than the minimum payments. Try not to take on more debt in the future.
• Keep your old accounts: A long credit history with the same accounts indicates stability.
• Avoid excess credit applications: If you apply for credit frequently, it may be seen as a sign that you need to rely on credit to pay your bills.
• Correct errors: Review your reports and if you spot errors, contact the relevant credit bureau and ask them to fix it.

Don’t know what’s on your report?
You can get a free copy of your credit report once a year from each of the three credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com.

3 Tips for Safer Online Shopping

The holiday season is a prime time for hackers, scammers, and online thieves. While millions of Americans will be online looking for the best gifts and deals, hackers will be looking to take advantage of unsuspecting shoppers by searching for weaknesses in their devices or internet connections or attempting to extract personal and financial information through fake websites or charities. Use these tips to keep your information and devices safe.

1. Check your devices – Make sure the device you’re using to shop online is up-to-date, your accounts have strong passwords and that multifactor authentication is enabled where available.

2. Only shop trusted sources – Be careful how you’re searching online to find deals. Do not click on random email links or ads on webpages. Instead, type in the safe URLs of retailers you know are legitimate. If it looks suspicious, something’s probably not right.

3. Use safe purchasing methods – If you’re going to make that purchase, what information are you handing over? Before providing personal or financial information, check the website’s privacy policy. Make sure you understand how your information will be stored and used.

Back to School Bash – Bibb & Baldwin

Both the Baldwin County and Bibb County school districts hosted their annual Back-to-School events in July. Families received school uniform shirts, backpacks, and school supplies, as well as community and District resources. In addition to being a sponsor, MidSouth Community staff also volunteered at the events.
