History
MidSouth Federal Credit Union is the oldest, locally owned financial institution in Macon, Georgia. It was originally chartered in 1936 as Bibb Teachers Federal Credit Union to serve the educators of Bibb County. During the Great Depression, two principals, over their backyard fence, developed the idea of forming a credit union because they felt educators were not being treated fairly by local lenders. In 1972, the first permanent location was constructed on Lasseter Place in Macon (across from Miller Middle School) and continues to operate as a MidSouth branch office today.
Over the years, the credit union grew and services became available to select employee groups. Because of the diversity of our membership, the Board of Directors voted to change the name to MidSouth Federal Credit Union effective October 1, 1996. This name was chosen because of its generic quality that represents everyone, not one specific employee group.
With the addition of new groups and several mergers with smaller credit unions, it was necessary for MidSouth to expand its facilities. With increased interest in the Milledgeville area, a branch was opened on the Georgia College & State University campus where it remained until moving to the Capitol Square Shopping Center in 1995. In 2001, a new building was constructed at 375 Hammock Rd. N.W., adjacent to the Columbia Professional Center (the old Nestlé plant). In December 2001, MidSouth FCU moved its Capitol Square office into the new building. Additionally, a MidSouth office was opened in the Maxwell Student Union Building at Georgia College & State University in December 2001. The GC&SU office is open from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m., Monday and Wednesday, and from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
The main office, located at 4810 Mercer University Drive in Macon, was constructed and opened in 1993 as a full-service location. It houses the credit union’s administrative offices.
MidSouth FCU’s expansion into Houston County resulted in the opening of the Warner Robins office, located at 104 N. Houston Road across from the Houston Mall, in July 2002.
In Spring of 2006, MidSouth opened its newest office located at 3205 Hartley Bridge Road. With a drive-thru atm and additional safety deposit boxes, MidSouth FCU was able to further expand our services to meet the needs of residents in South Bibb County.
Today, MidSouth Federal Credit Union has more than $120 million in assets and a membership that includes more than 35,000 members. We are open to any person who works or lives in these Middle Georgia counties: Baldwin, Bibb, Crawford, Hancock, Houston, Jones, Monroe, Peach, Pulaski, Putnam, Twiggs, Washington, and Wilkinson
